Edmonton’s Max Prime is a battle rapper predisposed towards absurd disses and abstract concepts, but with Tranquility he puts those techniques to work dissecting negative feelings like anger, selfishness and frustration from an intimate, first person perspective. But, of course, the mastermind behind Menstrual Cycles still finds time to crack a smile with two of the album’s best tracks: Asian-inspired punchline-fest “Commit Bio-genetic Cyberneticide” and slamming braggadocio track “Polluted Ressurection” [sic] which merges medieval monks with synths. Prime, who produces all but “Never Free” (a more traditional hip hop contribution from Up In Arms owner Nato), also lightens up the mood with a couple of mellow instrumentals. Of the deeper, darker tracks, standouts include: “Made Infinite,” which describes the thin line that separates depression from suicide over an upbeat production with great old-style female backing vocals and a guitar sample that sounds like it was recorded underwater; posse cut “Painting of God” featuring Corvid Lorax, Mindbender, Add-Vice and Planit; and “Fuck What You Think,” Prime’s epic “Don’t Believe The Hype”-type track which samples the tapping of wood blocks and glasses. Despite the heavy subject matter, Tranquility is surprisingly uptempo and not nearly as depressing to listen to as one would expect. However, those who haven’t really heard Max Prime before may find Menstrual Cycles to be an easier introduction. [Thomas Quinlan]
